Written in 1972, Title IX states that “no person in the United States shall on the basis of sex, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” The most obvious application of this applies to men’s and women’s athletics at both the high school and college level, however it also works to create equality among other organizations, such as honors fraternities.

In an e-mail sent out to the UMass Amherst campus community yesterday, Chancellor Holub announced the first results of the Budget Planning Task Force’s meetings. Over $500,000 will be cut from the central administration’s executive area, and a spending freeze of $5 million has been placed on capital construction, effective immediately.

A victory for Barack Obama was portrayed as a symbol of change in U.S. politics, and to world leaders, the possibility for change in the United States’ relationship with other countries. In a time of war and great economic turmoil, however, being a symbol is not enough. Now, with the whole world watching, President-elect Barack Obama must deliver.

After eight years of Republican policy in America, it was no secret where foreign loyalties lay in this year’s presidential election. In a recent poll conducted by The Guardian, eight major countries were asked who they would elect as the next President of the United States, and all eight countries favored Barack Obama.

Prior to the 2008 presidential election, many Americans did not think they would live to see a black president. In the 1960s and 1970s, the idea of a black man becoming president was a pipe dream. There were no black senators or congressmen.

By now, we know all about the drama and historic precedents that were set in this election campaign. But how did it all come together so perfectly for Obama? How were Americans able to put aside any prejudices or stereotypes they may have held? Did race play as big of a role in this election as one may think?

The CRC started up in 1990 with the goal of decriminalizing marijuana, making it the oldest student-run drug reform group in the country. After 19 years of campaigning and rallying, the group’s original objective was finally accomplished.

On Nov. 4, Massachusetts voters passed an initiative to decriminalize marijuana in the state. Greg Collins, the President of the UMass Republican Club, believes that the passing of the question does not send the right message.
