U.S. Senate hopeful and University of Massachusetts alumnus Ed O’Reilly campaigned Thursday night at The Black Sheep Deli in Amherst, raising his concerns about the war, healthcare and education.
A crowd of almost 20 came to show support for the local Democrat who hopes to defeat fourth term Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) in November.
“I do work, [Kerry] does photo opportunities and sound bites,” said O’Reilly as the crowed applauded.

“A hate crime was committed, hate speech was committed, and then an altercation broke out,” said Chris Tinson, an assistant resident director in the Southwest residential area. Tinson was one of the first to speak at the vigil and urged the group to “own the dialog around this issue.”

Extra police patrols have been assigned to the University of Massachusetts campus after a threatening message was discovered this afternoon in an academic building, university officials said.
A janitor found the message in a second-floor men’s bathroom in Bartlett Hall, said UMass spokesman Ed Blaguszewski. While the contents of the note have not been released, a statement by the university states the message was “threatening violence with a weapon.”

Hoping for a super turnout during today’s rainy Massachusetts primary, two University of Massachusetts student groups shuttled eager voters to area polling places throughout the day.
The vans picked up registered voters at three different campus locations and brought them to one of three polling places in Amherst during Super Tuesday, with 24 states around the country holding primaries or caucuses. The free shuttle services were organized by UMass Democrats and Students for Obama.
“A lot of people don’t know how to vote, or they’re from different towns and don’t know if they can vote here or what they can do to be able to vote from campus,” said Matt Giancola, president of the UMass Democrats.
