13th Hour Reprieve: Inside the Globe Countdown

“13th Hour Reprieve” is a multimedia project conceived, reported and edited by students in the Spring 2009 Multimedia Journalism class at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Students divided up into reporting teams and began the project with a little more than one month left in the semester. Reporting for the project required students to get out of their comfort zones at UMass Amherst and into Boston and its surrounding communities. Each reporting team made multiple trips to the Boston area to try and capture the many complicated elements of the story, including trying to get a sense of what The Boston Globe means to Boston, the region, and the state. The result is an impressive package capturing the story with words, sounds and images.

As of this writing, the future of The Globe remains unclear. Multiple news outlets, including The Globe, Dan Kennedy and Mark Potts are reporting that there is still uncertainty regarding contracts, union concessions and the relationship with The New York Times Co. So, as with much in the journalism business these days, “13th Hour Reprieve” was a headline that was good for the moment. Things may still change.
