Campus remembers VTech massacre
Written by Lisa Linsley, AmherstWire.com Wednesday, 16 April 2008 20:03
University of Massachusetts sophomore Jennifer Iaconetti says the tragic massacre at Virginia Tech one year ago made her grasp that tragedies can happen at any point in time.
Iaconetti has friends who are students at Virginia Tech and recalls looking at their statuses on Facebook following the shooting.
“There is a drastic difference between watching news reports and seeing your friends' statuses on Facebook saying that they're home for two weeks because they're so shaken up,” she said. “It made me personally realize that anything can happen at any given time with no warning whatsoever.”

Standing on the Student Union steps, about 20 University of Massachusetts students quietly sang Israel’s national anthem Friday afternoon, mourning the eight students who were shot in a Jewish seminary in Jerusalem Friday.
“You don’t actually need to know the language to feel what it’s saying in our hearts,” said Matt Hoffman, president of the UMass Student Alliance for Israel. “It’s the national anthem and children learn this song in childhood, either in camp or Yeshiva or other Jewish Hebrew schools.”

Police: Two threats are similar
Written by Eric Athas, AmherstWire.com Monday, 03 March 2008 08:29
A threatening message discovered in a University of Massachusetts men’s bathroom this morning is similar to a note found last week in a different building, a UMass official said.
Early this morning, a custodian found a note in a first-floor men’s room of Furcolo Hall, according to a press release. Although the details of that message have not been released, there’s some resemblance to a threatening note found in a Bartlett Hall bathroom last Tuesday, said UMass spokesman Ed Blaguszewski.
“After the assessment of the note, [police] do think there’s some commonality between this one and the previous threat,” said Blaguszewski.

"A hate crime was committed, hate speech was committed, and then an altercation broke out," said Chris Tinson, an assistant resident director in the Southwest residential area. Tinson was one of the first to speak at the vigil and urged the group to "own the dialog around this issue."
